Souness : "I Won't Quit...."

Another manager have his head on the chopping block....

LONDON, Jan 15 (AFP) - Under-fire Newcastle boss Graeme Souness insisted he won't quit despite seeing his side slump to a 1-0 defeat at Fulham on Saturday which left them in 13th place in the Premiership.

To make matters worse, Souness saw his injury list grow even further with Titus Bramble failing a fitness test on an ankle injury while Stephen Carr was substituted at half-time at Craven Cottage because of a stomach complaint.

"I chose to be in this job and things don't always go your way. But I'll keep going. As a manager you have to be optimistic and think things are going to get better," said Souness.

Michael Owen, Scott Parker, Emre, Kieron Dyer, Craig Moore, Shola Ameobi and Steven Taylor are already in the St James' Park treatment room.

But the manager remained philosophical.

"That's life," he said.

The match looked destined for a goalless draw with both sides missing chances but French substitute Steed Malbranque pounced in the 75th minute to snatch victory.

"We scrapped in the first half and found another gear in the second. We feel hard done by. We had Fulham under pressure and enjoyed some good possession," said Souness.

"We committed people forward and had a good shout for a penalty - their defender Ian Pearce admitted to some of my players he'd handled the ball.

"With the players available I felt we gave a good account of ourselves."

Fulham boss Chris Coleman felt his side were worthy winners.

"This was a massive result for us. Both teams are crippled with injuries so we knew this was never going to be easy," he said.

Sunderland plan Chelsea shock

A miracle if it really happen....

SUNDERLAND, England, Jan 14 (AFP) - Mick McCarthy insists his rock-bottom Sunderland side can defeat champions Chelsea on Sunday and he doesn't care if people fall about laughing at his confidence.

The Black Cats are on course for relegation having taken just six points from 20 Premiership matches this season. They have just one win.

In stark contrast, Chelsea sit at the top of the table with 58 points and are 13 ahead of their closest challengers Manchester United.

In 21 league matches this season, they have lost just once.

But McCarthy doesn't care about the bare statistics.

"Somebody will beat Chelsea at some time," said McCarthy.

"Everyone can laugh and scoff but it might be us. It might not be but it won't be for the want of trying.

"We'll go out there and battle and hope to get a break."

Chelsea striker Carlton Cole, meanwhile, fresh from scoring the opening goal in last weekends FA Cup win over Huddersfield, is preparing for action on Sunday in a stadium with happy memories for him.

The 22 year-old striker scored the winning goal on Chelseas last visit to the Stadium of Light back in April 2003.

"That was a great day for me," Cole told the Chelsea website.

In that game, the Londoners came from 2-1 down to win.

"I had come back off loan at Wolves and I got the chance to impress (then Chelsea manager) Claudio Ranieri. I came off the bench at half-time and he said just go out there and work for the team. I was a bit selfish for the goal."

The match against Huddersfield was Coles first start since returning from two seasons away at Charlton and Aston Villa.

With Didier Drogba now away on African Nations Cup duty, Cole knows he is the main back-up to Hernan Crespo.

"It is a perfect opportunity. It is what I have been waiting for for three years now. Last week it was just nice to put on a Chelsea shirt and score again," said Cole.

"Ive learned lots of things on the training pitch. You can only learn if you are playing with world class players every day. You have got to be focussed and committed all the time because you dont know when the manager is going to call on you.

"The manager is the key to you playing so you have got to try to impress him."

Real Madrid deny Cole move

MADRID (AFP) - Spanish giants Real Madrid denied reports linking them with a move for Arsenal defender Ashley Cole.

It had been reported that the Spanish outfit were targetting the 25-year-old England international as a replacement for Brazil's Roberto Carlos.

But Real said in a statement: "The club wishes to clarify that at no time has Real Madrid confirmed via any official spokesman that it has made a move for Ashley Cole or any other player."

It added: "Due to the excellent and fluid relations which exist between Arsenal and Real Madrid, the English club would always be first to know of any possible interest regarding any of its players."

Cole had stressed that he was focusing on regaining full fitness.

He said: "I've three years left on my contract at Arsenal and I'm looking forward to playing in the new stadium.

"The speculation has been in every paper since the start of the season, but there's nothing I can do, people are going to write stories.

"My main aspiration at the moment is to try and get back fit, that and trying to win things with Arsenal."

Carlos added: "This type of speculation does not affect me, because Real always have to look for the best players."

"I've a contract for two more seasons, with the last year being an option which is down to me," added Carlos who joined Real from Inter Milan in 1996.

Lucarelli dreaming of Italy recall

ROME, Jan 9, 2006 (AFP) - Livorno captain Cristiano Lucarelli is hoping his eye for goal will earn him a place in Italys World Cup squad.

The 29-year-old striker scored both goals in Sunday's 2-0 win at Sampdoria, taking his league tally to nine and strengthening Livorno's position in fifth place in Serie A.

Now he has set his sights on playing in Germany this summer where Italy have been drawn together with Ghana, the Czech Republic and the USA in the group stage.

"I'd go to the World Cup just to lace the boots of my teammates," said Lucarelli who was called up by Marcello Lippi for Italy's tour of the United States last summer.

"Ive been dreaming of wearing the Azzurri shirt again and it hasn't happened yet.

"Last season I was top scorer (with 24 goals) and this season I am playing well, so why shouldn't I be hopeful?"

Lucarelli scored on his debut against Serbia and Montenegro but in his next game he missed a penalty against Ecuador and has not been called up since.
