Cunningham hangs up international boots

Birmingham City defender Kenny Cunningham has decided to call time on his international career with the Republic of Ireland.

The Irish national team’s elimination from the 2006 World Cup proved to be too much for the 34-year-old player, as he officially announced his international boots were hung up for good.

"It is the end of the road for me, without a doubt. I don't want to dwell on it too much on what is a hugely disappointing night for the entire group. I feel for our supporters and everybody who has got behind the team and I am sorry we have come up short,” confirmed the disappointed Birmingham City defender.

Meanwhile, Matt Holland has hinted he was to follow Cunningham’s example, but the 31-year-old Charlton midfielder decided to give himself more time to ponder his future with the Republic of Ireland squad
